This March, as it's International Women's Day on 8th, we’re celebrating the women-led projects that The Canvas is providing a launchpad and incubation for.
The Canvas exists to be a blank canvas for positive activism, and since we opened in 2014, we have facilitated and enabled the launch of over 50 new positive ideas to London, including Fat Macy's supper clubs supporting the homeless, Mike's Table providing meals to service users and refugees, Shoreditch Dog House offering doggy-day care which feeds those in needs in Tower Hamlets via our pay-it-forward board, and the world's first Museum of Happiness.
Did you know that all those projects listed above are women-led? It's not surprising, given that 59% of start-ups owned by business owners under 35 are women. But in recent years, only 9% of startup investment has gone to female-owned businesses.
Launching a new project is incredibly difficult - we know this too well; our founder, Ruth Rogers, went through hell and high water to get The Canvas launched and established. Which is why we now offer free and affordable space and support to changemakers with positive ideas, to give them that first step on making their dream a reality.
This month, we're celebrating the women-led businesses and ideas that we have helped to launch. Look out for our social media posts throughout the month looking back at female founders who have used The Canvas as their blank canvas for their inspiring project.
And this month sees some incredible women-led events on our events calendar, including our very own event for International Women's Day on 8th March: The Community of Women working together in Tower Hamlets, chaired by Josie Cox, business editor at The Independent. Be sure to check them out, and don't forget; if you have a positive idea, can The Canvas be your blank canvas? Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
